Cinnamon Fern
The Cinnamon Fern (Osmundastrum cinnamomeum) is a showy, graceful fern that is well-known for its dramatic height and the cinnamon-colored fertile fronds it produces in early spring. Its large, frilly fronds, which can reach up to four feet tall, give the garden a dramatic vertical element that draws the eye and provides movement and structure to shaded areas. The delicate, finely cut green fronds form an airy, vase-shaped plant that provides the garden with an air of elegance.
The fern gets its name from its cinnamon-brown fertile fronds, which peek out from the center of the plant like sculptural plumes in a warm, inviting rust color. They contrast beautifully with the bright green foliage around them, giving the garden a three-dimensional feel. As the season progresses, the fern’s green fronds unfurl outward in a graceful arch, creating a soft, waving silhouette that is the epitome of elegance and works well in woodland borders, shaded walkways, and naturalized settings.
Cinnamon Ferns do best in part to full shade and require consistently damp, rich soil to thrive. They're ideal for planting by a stream, pond or in a moist woodland garden. Their large stature and upright form make them a great focal point in the garden and their dense foliage can be used as a backdrop for smaller, shade-loving plants such as hostas, astilbes, and woodland wildflowers. Groupings of Cinnamon Ferns create sweeping drifts of feathery green that evoke the feeling of a peaceful, forested glade.
One of the great benefits of the Cinnamon Fern is that it is low-maintenance and long-lived. It can handle a variety of soil types, as long as it is kept moist, and is generally resistant to pests and deer browsing. It is also a fern that has interest in all seasons, with the showy cinnamon-colored fronds emerging in spring, the lush green foliage throughout the summer, and the soft fading in the fall.
Incorporating Cinnamon Ferns into your garden instantly elevates the space with their graceful shape, bold texture, and verticality. They provide a sense of refinement to naturalized areas while still blending in with other plant life. Whether used as a single specimen for a show-stopping statement, in groups for a softer, more natural feel, or as part of a layered woodland garden design, the Cinnamon Fern offers a timeless elegance that will enhance the beauty and tranquility of your shaded garden for years to come.
